Two weeks ago, we woke up to the news that 13 years old, Alfie Patten, had become Britain’s youngest dad. Alfie’s daughter, Maise, was born to him by his 15 year old girlfriend, Chantelle Steadman. The news that such a young boy had fathered a baby prompted a fierce political debate over the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the UK and the sexualisation of children, following which it was said we were now a “Broken Britain”. As bad as this is, last week two other teenage boys, Richard Goodsell, 16, and Tyler Barker, 14, told the News of the World that they had slept with Chantelle at about the time she became pregnant and claimed she also had several other sexual partners and consequently there’s now a paternity debate as to who is really the baby’s father. Alfie has come out to say that he is willing to take a DNA test as soon as possible to establish whether he is Maisie’s father. What a mess, what a stinking mess this is! While I am tempted to agree with the voices that have called us a “Broken Britain”, I do know that where sin abounds, the grace of God abounds much more. My prayer is that the grace of God will continue to abound in our nation to overcome the sin in the land.
~ A word for your week ~ Pro 14:34
Beloved, our text this week says “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”. Surely, the case of Alfie in a paternity struggle with other teenagers is a reproach, shameful and shows how poor morally Britain has become. While we celebrate advancements in other spheres of life and society, we cannot surely be celebrating a generation of young people who are not fit and ready to take on the responsibility of raising children when they are themselves children still needing the guidance of their parents. What does anyone at 13 know about life? No nation attains righteousness this way. Where there is a clear absence of moral values that teaches abstinence, purity and respect for that which is sacred between a man and a woman as God made it, the consequence is what we are, without doubt, wrestling with today. Britain will do well to return to her good, godly and Christian roots where the teaching of the Holy Scriptures of the Bible was the framework for both public and private lives. Where generation after generation, the family unit was respected, husbands and fathers were seen as role models and mothers and wives were great home makers and home managers bringing out the best of their homes, there were good family values upheld by all and sundry. This is the Britain that was great and how we desperately need to see that Great Britain again. I believe that it will take us going back to God on our knees in repentance and submission to His wisdom. I have chosen to do so and hope you will too.
